Belfast International Airport operates 24/7 all year round, and it is Northern Ireland’s Principal Airport. It is formerly known as Aldergrove Airport, named after the village, Aldergrove, and it is located at Belfast BT29 4AB. It flies over the European metropolitan area and has a seasonal route to Orlando, USA operated by Virgin Atlantic. Let’s know more about it here!
The history of the Belfast International Airport started in November 1917 when the first world war ended, Aldergrove remained open for Royal Air Force aircraft. In June 1921, King George V and Mary decided to visit Northern Ireland, and their aircraft landed at Aldegrove. In May 1925, Northern Ireland’s Special Reserve unit No 502 (Ulster) Squadron RAF was formed.
From 1939 to 1945, Aldergrove remained an RAF base during the second World War. And then from 1946 to 1963, the flights from Nutts Corner were diverted to Aldergrove because of the weather conditions. On January 4, 1966, the first regular jet service was offered, and in 1968, Aer Lingus and BOAC started to offer flights to New York.
A lot has happened as time went by and in January 1983, the airport was then renamed as Belfast International. Immediately, the annual passenger number was 1.5 million, and then eventually, 2 million. On July 17, 1991, the cargo center has officially opened.
All throughout the years, as the airport was being developed, the annual passenger number kept on going up. And on the 29th of August 2018, VINCI Airports bought Belfast International Airport.
